Sharing External Harddrive across network

Is this possible using a router?

I have an external HD that I would like to have available to all computers on my network without having my main computer always switched on.

There are external network hard drives available that have ethernet ports to connect to your router.

For normal external hard drives - some routers have a usb slot that you can attach a HD to in theory, not sure if this actually works but worth looking into.

Cheers for the reply, I ended up just attaching it to my main computer as a back-up drive.
